From Yoik to Music: Pop, Rock, World, Ambient, Techno, Electronica, Rap, and…

K. Olle Edström

The article discusses the cultural turn that happened in the 1970s and its effect on a slowly developing Sami popular music scene. The major aims of the article are to given empirically grounded overview of, as well as a theoretical discussion of the causes for the musical stylistical changes thas has taken part since the early 1970s. It is clear that the prerequisites for this development were quite different depending on different socio-political situations that the Sami have encountered in the three Scandinavian countries, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Apart from discussing recent trends, the article mainly follows the musical trajectory and inner and outer importance for four Sami artists, Nils-Aslak Valkepää. Mari Boine, Frode Fjellheim, and Wimme Saari whose music/songs can be placed in different places in the vast and fast developing musical Sami landscape.
